What's so cool about HOT Yoga?

There is no tree-hugging or pretzel-twisting in our HOT Power Yoga class!

Power
Yoga is essentially yoga with brawn. It's the American interpretation of ashtanga yoga, a discipline that combines stretching, strength training, and meditative breathing. But power yoga takes ashtanga one step further. Many of the poses (also called postures or their Sanskrit name, asanas) resemble basic calisthenics -- push-ups and handstands, toe touches and side bends -- but the key to power yoga's sweat-producing, muscle-building power is the pace. Instead of pausing between poses as you would in traditional yoga, each move flows into the next, making it an intense aerobic workout.

Some Like It HOT!

Hot Yoga is a dynamic, energizing practice that sculpts, hones and tones every muscle in the body. You don’t need to be especially flexible or incredibly fit to do this yoga. You just need to do it. The results speak for themselves. When done regularly, Hot Yoga can be life-changing. You will find yourself craving better food, sleeping more soundly, and feeling a general sense of health and well-being. So, bring your mat, water bottle, and hand towel... and come prepared to sweat!

Playin' With Fire

Hot Yoga is the ideal practice for athletes of all kinds (keeping in mind that an "athlete" is anyone who engages in a sport, exercise, or activity that requires physical agility, strength, or stamina). A regular yoga practice will give you improved balance, core strength, overall power, flexibility, range of motion, and mental focus. The heat makes your muscles more elastic and pliable which allows for deeper, safer stretching. It enhances vasodilation, so more blood and oxyen is delivered to the muscles. It also speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids, thins the blood, and increases the heart rate for an excellent cardiovascular workout.

Top professional, amateur, and recreational athletes are finally discovering their "edge" by incorporating a regular yoga practice in to their training schedules (http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-270/Thinking-of-Beginning-Yoga-in-2010-Discover-Pro-Athletes-Who-Already-Practice-on-the-Mat.html). It also helps prevent injury by lengthening muscles, strengthening and lubricating joints, and increasing range of motion. It gives the body a needed rest from repetitive motions of one sport while still offering a cardiovascular workout. And, the breath control learned in yoga will help keep your body and mind calm in stressful conditions.

"Basketball is an endurance sport, and you have to learn to control your breath; that’s the essence of yoga, too.  So, I consciously began using yoga techniques in my practice and playing.  I think yoga helped reduce the number and severity of injuries I suffered.  As preventative medicine, it’s unequaled."---Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

A regular yoga practice will give you:

  • Improved performance
  • Reduced risk of injury
  • Quicker recovery rate
  • Calmness under pressure

Don't just take our word for it...read the articles on our Resources/Articles page.  Ray Lewis and LeBron James, among many other professional athletes are crediting yoga for improving their athletic performance!  Be sure to read the informative article that was submitted to Amateur Endurance.   It was written by an athlete who believes that yoga should be part of every athlete's training schedule.  To view a list of professional athletes and professional sports teams (yes, entire teams) who are incorporating yoga into their training schedules, visit http://www.holisticmed.com/exercise-yoga.html.
